Women In Defence and Security (WiDS) -

Mentoring Program

WiDS Mentorship Program

What is WiDS?

Women in Defence and Security (WiDS) provides its members with opportunities for professional development and networking in order to foster the involvement and advancement of women in defence and security careers across Canada. It is affiliated with the Canadian Association of Defence and Security Industries, and encourages the involvement of both men (as mentors) and women (as mentors and mentees) to increase networking potential in these sectors.

WiDS and Mentoring:

Mentoring programs are a leading talent development and recruitment tool today. Mentoring provides opportunities for existing or emerging talent, and helps foster and retain that talent in the defence and security sectors. Mentors can offer guidance, share expertise and become role models – providing a “risk-reduced” environment for the mentees. Expansion of leadership abilities, improvements in specific skill sets, and a desire to enhance career advancement opportunities are only a few benefits of joining this program.

This is a completely voluntary program. There are no fees/payments to join the mentorship program. WiDS is inviting applications for both mentors and mentees. WiDS will endeavour to match mentees with an appropriate mentor, however, an application does not necessarily guarantee participation.

Mentors and the mentees are expected to meet monthly. Periodic contact will be made with all participants to make sure that everyone is on the right track. Professionalism will be expected throughout the program and communication will be the key to making these developing relationships work.

Having a clear definition of the goals and learning objectives will be the first step in starting the process for the individuals involved. Constructive feedback will also be welcome and expected in order to ensure that this endeavour succeeds.

For advice and tips on how to be a good mentor/mentee, please see the attached document - WiDS Mentorship Program Tips

The WiDS Mentorship Program is strictly a volunteer program and participation is done so with the full knowledge that there is no remuneration or obligation for employment. Any costs are the obligation of the participants. This program is designed to help people gain valuable knowledge and skills, which will help to succeed in the defence and security sector.
