Scholarship Opportunities

WiDS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP 2011

Women in Defence and Security (WiDS), has established the Memorial Scholarship to encourage women to pursue careers related to the national defence and security interests of Canada. The scholarship for 2011 will be $10,000, and applications are due no later than Wednesday, October 20, 2010.

Awards will be based on academic achievement, participation in defence and national security activities, field of study, work experience, statements of objectives, and recommendations. Awards are made without regard to race, creed, colour, or religion.

ELIGIBILITY:

Applicants must meet the following criteria: No exceptions will be considered.

• be currently enrolled at an accredited university or college, either full-time or part- time;

• undergraduate and graduate students are eligible; undergraduates must have attained at least 3rd year university;

• demonstrate interest in pursuing a career related to national security or defence;

• have a minimum grade point average of 70%;

• provide evidence of community, education or professional leadership;

• be a woman; and

• be a citizen of the Canada.
  
  NOTE:
  1. Students who are already fully subsidized (ie RMC) or in receipt of more than $10,000 in other academic scholarships are not eligible to apply.
  2. Reservists paying their way through RMC are eligible.

Coupled with an emphasis in national security, the preferred fields of study include:

• security studies

• military history

• government relations, government policy

• engineering, computer science

• physics

• mathematics

• medical

• business (as it relates to national security or defence)

• law (as it relates to national security or defence)

• international relations

• political science

• economics

Others will be considered if the applicant can successfully demonstrate relevance to a career in the areas of national security or defence.
