2017 Memorial Scholarship Breakfast

This year’s Annual Memorial Scholarship Award Ceremony will take place over breakfast on International Women’s Day, 8 March, 2017 at the Shaw Centre in Ottawa.  The venue will open for registration and networking at 7:30 a.m. followed by breakfast at 8:00 a.m.

On behalf of WiDS Canada, WiDS invites you all to attend this important and moving event. Please purchase a ticket, buy a table for a team or look into one of our great sponsorship packages.

Each year, WiDS presents the scholarship award in honour of a woman who paid the ultimate sacrifice. In celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary and 100 years since Vimy Ridge, the WiDS 2017 memorial scholarship is dedicated to nursing Sister Katherine Maud Macdonald.  She was enlisted with the Canadian Army Corps, 3rd Stationary Hospital in Pas de Calais, France.  Nursing Sister Macdonald died during a German air raid on British hospitals on 19 May, 1918.  She was the first Canadian female killed in World War I.

Our scholarship recipient is a young, motivated woman pursing studies and a career in defence and security. Selected from over 50 applicants this year, we are excited to help her launch and introduce her to individuals committed to changing the face of the defence and security community.

Previous scholarships have been awarded in honour of Captain Nicola Goddard, the first female Canadian combat soldier killed in combat, Trooper Karine Blais who died when the vehicle she was riding in struck an improvised explosive device in Afganistan and Constable Della Beyak of the RCMP who died as a result of a motor vehicle accident when responding to a fatal automobile accident in 1989.

Mark your calendars and purchase your tickets to this outstanding event. We look forward to seeing you there as we continue to honour nursing sister MacDonald, support scholarship and celebrate the progress and contribution women make in this domain.
