Women in Defence and Security (WiDS) is now accepting applications to join its Executive Team.

The Executive Team comprises leaders at all stages of their careers from across the defence and security industries who drive opportunities for the membership to meet, learn, and grow. Their collective contributions aim to meet WiDS’s three strategic pillars: Creating Connections, Recognizing Excellence, and Developing Talent.

We are looking to immediately fill the following Volunteer roles:

  • Vice President, Professional Development
  • Vice President, Marketing and Communications
  • Co-Vice President, Scholarships & Fellowships
  • Co-Vice President, Government Relations - DND/CAF
  • Co-Vice President, Industry Relations

These positions are held for three-year terms and are a succession platform to the President and Executive Vice President roles. Positions are open to anyone – men and women – across Canada working within the defence and security industries at all career stages.

Co-VP, Industry Relations

The Co-Vice President, Industry Relations promotes effective two-way industry engagement with WiDS and maintains the WiDS Industry Champions Network.

As the Co-VP, Industry Relations, your duties/responsibilities include: 

  • Promote industry attendance at all WiDS events
  • Sustain WiDS relationship with members of the Industry Champions Network
    • Identify and secure Industry Champions (in consultation with WiDS Executive and CADSI)
    • Develop and maintain terms of reference for the Network
    • Organize and conduct regular in-person or virtual meetings with the Network
    • Ensure Industry Champions have the necessary tools and information to spread awareness of, participate in, and/or sponsor WiDS events
  • Work with Industry Champions to identify Liaison Officers
    • Ensure Liaison Officers have the necessary tools and information to spread awareness of, participate in, and/or sponsor WiDS events
    • Ensure regular communications with Liaison Officers via virtual or in-person meetings
  • Liaise with the VP, Sponsorships to secure industry sponsorship of WiDS programs
  •  Attend and participate in all WiDS Executive meetings, via virtual or in-person meetings

To be selected, we ask that you demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of the key players in the defence and security industries
  • Outreach and business development skills
  • Prior engagement with WiDS or another NGO

 

Co-VP, Government Relations - DND/CAF

The Co-Vice President, Government Relations promotes effective two-way engagement between WiDS and the Department of National Defence/Canadian Armed Forces and maintains the WiDS Executive Champions Network.

As the Co-VP, Government Relations - DND/CAF, your duties/responsibilities include: 

  • Promote DND/CAF attendance at all WiDS events
  • Sustain WiDS relationship with members of the Executive Champions Network
    • Identify and secure Executive Champions (in consultation with WiDS Executive and CADSI)
    • Develop and sustain relationships with the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces
    • Ensure regular communications with the Network via virtual or in-person meetings
    • Ensure Executive Champions have the necessary tools and information to spread awareness of, participate in, and/or sponsor WiDS events
  • Identify several employees within DND and related departments/organizations to function as Liaison Officers
    • Ensure Liaison Officers have the necessary tools and information to spread awareness of, participate in, and/or sponsor WiDS events
    • Ensure regular communications with Liaison Officers via virtual or in-person meetings
  •  Attend and participate in all WiDS Executive meetings, via virtual or in-person meetings

VP, Professional Development

The Vice President, Professional Development provides strategic direction for WiDS Developing Talent program offerings.

As the VP, Professional Development, your duties/responsibilities include: 

  • Plan and execute various professional development events and activities for the WiDS membership; look for opportunities to expand programming
  • Identify potential professional development workshop topics, formats, speakers, and facilitators
  • Liaise with the WiDS Project Manager and Professional Development Committee members to assist in implementation of the plan including venue, audiovisual, menu, badges, etc as required
  • Liaise with WiDS, VP Marketing and Communications as required to coordinate the marketing/communications for PD events
  • Liaise with WiDS Executive, especially Government and Industry Liaisons, to assist in the recruitment of leaders, speakers, mentors, participants, and volunteers for PD events
  • Attend and participate in all WiDS Executive meetings, via virtual or in-person meetings

To be selected, we ask that you demonstrate:

  • Leadership and project management experience
  • Experience in event planning
  • Prior engagement with WiDS or another NGO

 

Co-VP, Scholarships & Fellowships

The Co-Vice President, Scholarships & Fellowships co-manages the WiDS Scholarship and Fellowship program and co-leads the Scholarship Committee.

As the Co-Vice President, Scholarships & Fellowships, your duties/responsibilities include: 

  • Maintain and mature the Scholarship Application criteria, information, and database contact list to include academia and other organizations that disseminate scholarship application information
  • Manage the Scholarship Committee, including selecting candidates for the committee and ensuring the committee has a breadth of backgrounds
  • Organize candidate applications, filter applications based on mandatory criteria, create and disseminate packages to committee members and provide selection matrices.
  • In collaboration with Scholarship Committee members, identify most suitable WiDS Scholarship candidate as successful recipient
  • Ensure timely communication with responding to applicants’ questions and concerns. Responsible for all communication with the selected candidate, mentoring them through the process, and introducing them at the WiDS Scholarship Breakfast
  • Attend and participate in all WiDS Executive meetings, via virtual or in-person meetings

To be selected, we ask that you demonstrate:

  • Familiarity with the WiDS scholarship program
  • Organizational and interpersonal skills; along with a willingness to learn
  • Prior engagement with WiDS or another NGO


VP Marketing & Communications

The Vice President, Marketing & Communications narrates the WiDS story and drives brand awareness through effective marketing and communications campaigns.
 

As the VP, Marketing & Communications, your duties/responsibilities include:

  • Create an annual strategic communications plan with individualized activity-based plans
  • Manage all communications channels in the WiDS arsenal:  Website, Social Media Platforms, Marketing Collateral, Videos, Speech Writing, Newletters, Promotional Materials
  • Provide products on a quarterly basis to Industry and Executive Champions and Liason Officers for distribution via their respective internal communications channels
  • Leads the Marketing and Communications sub-committees for brand and social media
  • Attend and participate in all WiDS Executive meetings, via virtual or in-person meetings

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strategic thinking skills
  • Works well individually and as part of a team
  • Prior engagement with WiDS or another NGO
